Pakistan batting legend Younis Khan has stepped down from his role as the batting coach of the Pakistan cricket team. The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) made announced Khan’s departure on Tuesday. The former cricketer left his role ahead of the expiration of his contract with the side. Khan had joined the Pakistan side in November last year on a two-year contract. The side’s below-par performances in the recent past are likely the reason why he is resigning ahead of his contract. It will be a bit of a struggle for Pakistan to appoint a batting coach swiftly. Especially since the bilateral series against England is right around the corner.

“Pakistan Cricket Board and Pakistan men’s national cricket team batting coach Younis Khan today mutually agreed to part ways. Younis was appointed last year in November on a two-year contract until the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2022,” the PCB said in a statement.

“Both PCB and Khan have agreed to not to make any further comment on the reasons for the former captain’s departure,” the board added.

‘Sad to lose Younis Khan as coach’

PCB chief executive Wasim Khan said that it was unfortunate for the national team, to lose the services of such a seasoned former cricketer. He hoped, however, that the team can still rely on Younis to share his vast knowledge about the game and batting should he ever be called upon.

“It is sad to lose an expert of the stature and experience of Younis Khan. Following a series of discussions, we both have reluctantly but mutually and amicably agreed that it was time to move in different directions,” the PCB chief said after the announcement. “I want to thank Younis Khan for his contributions during his short stint as the Pakistan men’s national cricket team’s batting coach and hope he will remain available to assist the PCB by sharing his vast knowledge with the emerging cricketers,” he added.

The Pakistan side will likely travel to England for the bilateral series without a batting coach. This series will be followed by a tour of the West Indies. The board is likely to announce Younis Khan’s replacement ahead of that series.

Pakistan is scheduled to play three T20s and three ODIs against England. This series will commence on June 25 and go on until July 20. Following this will be a Pakistan tour of the West Indies. The subcontinent side will play five T20s and two Test matches against the hosts. The series will start on July 21 and conclude on August 24.
