The World Test Championship which can be described as the World Cup for the longest format of the game began with its first edition in 2019-2021. The inaugural World Test Championship saw its complications in schedule due to the Covid-19 situation but turned out to be a success with New Zealand becoming the champions. The Kiwis defeated the Virat Kohli-led Team India by eight wickets in the summit clash in Southampton to reign supreme in the inaugural edition. 

The second edition of the World Test Championship from 2021-23 got underway with the England vs India Test series on August 4, 2021. It was the only series alongside the Ashes in December 2021 which will be a five-Test series in the second cycle of the World Test Championship. The final of the second edition will be held on March 31, 2023 with its venue still to be decided.

WTC 2021-23: World Test Championship Points System

The International Cricket Council has simplified the point system for WTC 2021-23 cycle. Each team will get 12 points for a win, six for a tie, four for a draw, and zero for a loss. A win will give a team 100 percent of points whereas 50 will be awarded for a tie. In the first cycle of WTC, each series had 120 points, and teams that were playing the five-match Test series were at a disadvantage. Nine Test teams will battle it out for the Test mace as each team will play six series each during the two-year period. The first series of WTC 2021-23 will be the five-match series between England and India. The cut-off dates for all series will be 31st March 2023. In addition to this, a new schedule has also been updated by the ICC for the new tournament cycle.
