Afghanistan has earned automatic qualification for the 2023 World Cup in India after defeating Sri Lanka in the second One-Day International (ODI) in Pallekele. Afghanistan gained five points from the postponed game, bringing their total in the Cricket World Cup ODI Super League to 115. Things are not looking good for Sri Lanka, who are presently ranked 10th with 77 points after winning the most recent ODI. They just have three more ODI Super League games left. With only one more spot available, the West Indies, Ireland, South Africa, and Sri Lanka will be battling for it. The likes of Australia, New Zealand and England have confirmed their place.

West Indies have completed their fixtures while Ireland has a home series left against Bangladesh and South Africa is due to play the Netherlands and England in 5 ODIs while Sri Lanka too has just one series left. Keep in mind that the top 8 teams from the ODI Super League, including the hosts India, are guaranteed a spot in the 50-over World Cup in 2023. Despite not having a chance to qualify automatically, Zimbabwe and the Netherlands, two teams that compete in the 13-team ODI Super League, may still be able to make the 10-team tournament in India next year, depending on how well they perform in the World Cup Qualifiers.

How many teams will play in the World Cup?

Only one out of Ireland, the West Indies, Sri Lanka and South Africa will get an automatic qualification. The rest of the sides will have to play the qualifiers. Last time around for the 2019 WC, Afghanistan and West Indies qualified from the qualifiers. The World Cup Qualifying matches, which are most likely to take place in Zimbabwe next year, will feature the five teams from the ODI Super League ranked 9th-13th.

The top two teams from the Qualifiers play-offs as well as the top three teams from the ICC Cricket World Cup League 2 will join them. Only two more teams will advance from the qualifying to the main tournament in India since eight teams have already qualified automatically. When the CWC League 2 and the ODI Super League conclude in May of next year, the teams taking part in the Qualifiers will be determined.
