Tickner is a skiddy customer with the ball, he can bowl over 145 kmp/h on a regular basis. Blair Tickner is among those players in the international circuit who have been pretty unlucky, despite having some brilliant seasons in the domestic circuit. A 27-year-tall pacer, Tickner made an impact while playing for the Central Districts in November 2017, he took a hat-trick against Wellington and forced the selectors to look up and take notice. Tickner had earlier played club cricket in England and it was in the 2014 season that Tickner broke through and displayed his skills.

Tickner finished as the leading wicket-taker in the 2017/18 Super Smash T20 League and impressed everyone with his skills. He went from strength to strength and piled on the performances, he scalped 21 wickets in 11 matches. On the back of a magnificent season, Tickner was finally included in the New Zealand squad for the T20I series against India in January 2019. He made his debut and bagged the wicket of Rishabh Pant. Shortly after his international debut, Tickner had to miss the Super Smash for the Central Districts with an injury, he sprained his ankle while training and had to wait for his return.
