Their middle order includes Bhanuka Rajapaksa, Shahrukh Khan, and Liam Livingstone, and the additions of Curran and Raza significantly increase their prospects of winning the IPL in 2023.
Sam Curran, the most expensive player in IPL history, was acquired by the Punjab Kings for a record-breaking INR 18.50 crore in the IPL 2023 mini-auction. After the price reached INR 11 crore, Punjab Kings entered the bidding and outbid Mumbai Indians in the final bid. As was to be expected, PBKS made the opening offer for their former captain Mayank Agarwal, but Sunrisers Hyderabad beat them to the punch. Sikandar Raza, a standout all-arounder from Zimbabwe, was eventually signed for his basic salary of INR 50 lakh. Mukesh Kumar, an uncapped pacer, was also a target for PBKS, but Delhi Capitals ultimately won the race to sign him for INR 5.5 crore.
Punjab Kings released nine players, including captain Mayank Agarwal, and entered the 2023 auction with the second-largest purse of INR 32.2 crore. They had 16 players on their roster before the D day, including five international cricketers. They also released Caribbean all-rounder Odean Smith, and both Mayank and Odean needed immediate replacements. With freshly chosen captain Shikhar Dhawan and Jonny Bairstow as the openers, PBKS has their top-order set. Their middle order includes Bhanuka Rajapaksa, Shahrukh Khan, and Liam Livingstone, and the additions of Curran and Raza significantly increase their prospects of winning the IPL in 2023.
