Team India skipper Virat Kohli on Friday became the first captain from the nation to register 10 ducks in the longest format of the game. Kohli was dismissed for a duck on Day 1 of the ongoing second Test against New Zealand in Mumbai. The Team India skipper was adjudged LBW by umpire Anil Choudhary. Kohli opted for a review but the same did not work as there was no conclusive evidence to overturn the decision. The Team India skipper was seen shaking his head in the dressing room, with the jury still out over the dismissal. Kohli got an inside edge but it was difficult to ascertain whether the ball hit the bat first before hitting the pad or if the impact happened at the same time. MS Dhoni is the second name on the list with 8 ducks. Kohli further surpassed Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi’s tally of 5 ducks, registering his sixth dismissal, setting the record for the most number of ducks by an India captain at home.

Error from the umpire: Sanjay Bangar

Former Team India batting coach Sanjay Bangar termed Kohli’s dismissal as an error by the umpire.

“I certainly felt the ball hit the bat first. If you look at that deviation as to where the ball was going after the impact, clearly the ball hit the pad. There was wood on it. Otherwise, there was no chance the ball would have come back that much and hit the pad. Clearly, it was an error on the part of the umpire. What happens when the 3rd umpire looks to make a decision like that, if he looks to slow it down further and further, then it becomes difficult. It’s rather a good thing for the umpire to see it in real time. That’s where you get the cue that there is obviously a deviation. Too much emphasis on slowing it down actually makes it confusing for the 3rd umpire in making the right decision,” Bangar told broadcasters.

“He (Ajaz Patel) was phenomenal. He was tossing up the ball and using the moisture to good effect. The way he was always attacking the stumps, most of them were on good length, he wasn’t afraid of throwing it up and into the driving areas. That was in the driving area. He got those 3 crucial dismissals, which was what New Zealand were looking for,” he added.

Ajinkya Rahane, Ravindra Jadeja, Ishant Sharma ruled out with injuries

Team India vice-captain Ajinkya Rahane, all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja and fast-bowler Ishant Sharma are not a part of the lineup, having been ruled out of the second Test due to injuries. Rahane sustained a minor left hamstring strain while fielding on the final day of the 1st Test match in Kanpur. Since he has not recovered completely, he has been ruled out of the encounter in Mumbai. His progress will be closely monitored by the BCCI Medical team. Ishant dislocated his left little finger during the final day of the 1st Test match. The pacer is thus ruled out of the 2nd Test in Mumbai. His progress will continue to be monitored by the BCCI medical team.

Jadeja suffered a right forearm injury during the 1st Test match similarly. After undergoing scans, he was diagnosed with a swelling on his forearm. He has been advised rest and is thus ruled out of the 2nd Test.
