Australia won the opening Test of the three-match series against South Africa in a contest that lasted only two days. The opening two days at the Gabba saw 34 wickets fall as the batters were all over the place on a green top that offered little too much for the pace bowlers. The pitch was scrutinised by Netizens, who felt cheated out of an even battle between two famous Test-playing nations. Both Australia and South Africa are known for having great fast bowling attacks, and many people, including some cricket experts, believed they did not require any assistance at the Gabba.

Batting was not going to be easy on the surface, as the visitors were bowled out for a low total of 152 runs in their first innings. The home team did not fare much better in reply, and it was Travis Head’s brilliance with the bat that saw them grab a narrow lead in the game. Head’s performance proved important in the contest, as the Australian pacers, led by skipper Pat Cummins, thrashed the Proteas for 99 runs in their second innings. Australia needed only 34 runs to take a 1-0 lead in the series, and it appeared to be a simple task for the home team. Kagiso Rabada still made them sweat by scalping for Australian batsmen to rattle the hosts. Australia eventually won, although an extra 40-50 runs on this surface could have been enough for the visitors.
