Test trio recalled as 19-year-old fast-bowler Jayden Seales earns first West Indies call-up

Cricket West Indies has named a provisional 17-man squad for the upcoming two-match Test series against South Africa. The series will take place in St Lucia. The provisional squad is expected to be trimmed to a final 13 on Monday. The first Test will take place from 10 to 14 June. It is the final series in the current cycle of the ICC World Test Championship. The 17-man group includes one first-time inclusion. The player included is none other than 19-year-old fast bowler Jayden Seales.

Seales has played a total of 10 professional matches. He impressed in the recent Braithwaite XI vs Roston Chase XI tour match. The pacer picked four wickets.

The squad also sees recalls for Roston Chase, Shai Hope and Kieran Powell. The three players were left out of the squad in the recent Test series against Sri Lanka. Fast bowler Chemar Holder was unavailable due to injury, which is certainly a blow.

Young pacers Keon Harding, Preston McSween, Marquino Mindley and Nial Smith will all remain in St. Lucia. They will assist the Test squad with their preparations.

CSA Director of Cricket Graeme Smith recently expressed his delight after the team returned to the Caribbean. He further shared his gratitude to CWI and the governments of St. Lucia and Grenada for their helpfulness in ensuring the tour takes place.

“We are extremely pleased to have the men’s team’s tour to the West Indies officially confirmed. COVID-19 has played havoc with the ICC Future Tours Programme and we are thankful to Cricket West Indies and the governments of St. Lucia and Grenada for ensuring that the tour goes ahead as planned. The hosting nations, in particular, came to the party at very short notice and Cricket South Africa would like to extend its immense gratitude to them for their enthusiasm and willingness to host us,” he said as quoted by Cricket South Africa’s official website.

“Tours to the West Indies are always one of the most highly anticipated tours of them all, not only because of the beauty of the venues, but the quality and competitiveness of the cricket that is in store. We are looking forward to explosive displays of cricket and entertainment on our screens for fans around the world to consume as the two evenly matched countries come together for both Test and T20 cricket,” added Smith.
