Former England captain Joe Root surpassed Sachin Tendulkar to become the youngest to scale the mount 10,000 in Test cricket on Sunday. He remained unbeaten on 115 runs off 170 deliveries in the second innings against New Zealand in the first of three-match Test series to guide England to a five-wicket and take a 1-0 lead. In the process, the former England captain, became the joint-youngest player to score 10,000 runs in Test cricket along with his former compatriot and English great Alastair Cook.Â
His innings was special as England were left in a testing position after the dismissal of their new captain Ben Stokes (54) which saw the side reeling at 159/5 on Day 3. However. Root led by example in the second innings to guide England to a massive win. The hosts needed 62 runs to win on the penultimate day of the first Test and they chased down the total with relative ease. The job was done for England in the morning session with 15 overs remaining for the second new ball.
Root and his overnight partner Ben Foakes (32 not out) forged an unbeaten partnership of over 100 runs to take England over the line. Foakes played a perfect second fiddle to Root as he notched up three boundaries in his 92-ball unbeaten knock. England, thus, lead the three-match series 1-0 to mark the new era under captain Ben Stokes and coach Brendon McCullum.
