Robin Uthappa, a former member of the Indian National Cricket Team, thinks that if England wants to get the most out of Ben Stokes in T20Is, they should let him open the innings. Ben Stokes, 31, is regarded as one of the best all-rounders in the game. His numbers in T20I cricket, on the other hand, are not particularly outstanding. He has 533 runs at an average of 19.74 and a strike rate of 130.63 in 41 T20Is. He has only 25 wickets with the ball at an average of 32.24, an economy of 8.39, and a strike rate of 23.0.

Ben Stokes did not play in the IPL. He did not play for England for close to two years in T20Is. He was drafted in for the series against Australia just prior to the world cup. Jos Buttler had said that the management would look to give more opportunities at the top of the order and Stokes did bat at the top and effectively replaced Dawid Malan but he could not do much as these numbers suggest.

“I think it’s being questioned right now simply because of how rich the resources are with the English team at this point in time. If you want the most out of Ben Stokes the batsman, you need him to open the batting. “It happened at Rajasthan Royals, you could see how he utilised the first six overs. I don’t think his techniques and biomechanics allow him to be the best finisher in T20 cricket. But definitely as an opening batter, he utilises the first six overs exceptionally well.

Robin Uthappa said on ESPNcricinfo after the NZ vs ENG match.

Ben Stokes scored a hundred in the IPl while opening the batting for RR a couple of years ago, the question is who drops down the order if Stokes is to open the batting?
