Team India’s journey in the T20 World Cup 2022 came to an end on Thursday, 10th November with a thumping 10-wicket defeat by England at the Adelaide Oval. India dominated Group 2 in the Super 12 stage with four victories, but they were unable to defend 169 against a ruthless England, who won with four overs to spare. India passed up the chance to face archrival Pakistan in the final, as England joined the latter in recreating the 1992 World Cup final at the legendary Melbourne Cricket Ground on November 13th. Let us take a look at the positives and lows for India in the tournament.

The emergence of Arshdeep Singh

In Jasprit Bumrah’s absence, Arshdeep Singh was tasked with bowling with the new ball. He began the tournament on a high note, taking key scalps from Babar Azam, Mohammad Rizwan, and Asif Ali to finish with figures of 3 for 32 in the opener against Pakistan. Arshdeep then came through in the clutch against Bangladesh in their Group 2 match. In a rain-shortened encounter, he took the wickets of Shakib Al Hasan and Afif Hossain. The bowler took 10 wickets at a 15.6 average and an overall economy of 7.8 in the tournament and was the highest wicket-taker for India.

Virat and Surya: Two pillars of Indian batting

Virat returned to form exactly a month before the T20 World Cup after suffering from a lack of runs. Kohli smashed 296 runs in six matches with a strike rate of 136.40, including four 50s, after leading the side to victory against Pakistan in Melbourne. The former India captain beat Mahela Jayawardene to become the tournament’s leading run-scorer, with 1141 runs in 25 innings. Suryakumar Yadav, Kohli’s ideal ally, astounded everyone with his ability to play such stunning strokes all around the field. Suryakumar scored 239 runs in six matches, including three fifties, at an average of 59.75 and a strike rate of 189.69.

The Captain and the Vice Captain biggest flops in the tournament

The anguish of Indian openers due to a lack of runs was a big concern in their 2021 T20 World Cup defeats against Pakistan and New Zealand. KL Rahul scored 128 runs in six innings at a strike rate of 120.75 a year later, while Rohit scored 116 runs at a strike rate of 106.42. In six innings, the pair failed to score 50 runs together even once, with their best partnership of 27 runs against Zimbabwe in India’s final group-stage encounter. Rahul started the semi-final against England with a whacking boundary, but it didn’t last long on the pitch. While Rohit never got going in his 28-ball stay at the crease where he scored under less than run a ball.
