Limited-overs specialist Glenn Maxwell has been shockingly included in the Australia Test squad for the two-match series against Sri Lanka, starting from June 29 at the Galle International Stadium. The premier all-rounder will make a return in the Australia Test squad for the first time since. He will have to dust off his Baggy Green in order to join the squad after Travis Head is in doubt and Ashton Agar has been ruled out of the Test series opener in Galle on Wednesday.

Head suffered a hamstring injury earlier this week in the ODI series while Agar is carrying a side strain and has identified the second Test (also in Galle) as an earliest possible return date, according to an official statement. Along with Maxwell, Mitch Marsh and Josh Inglis are the other options to take up Head’s No.5 berth if the left-hander does not regain fitness in time.

Sri Lanka vs Australia, Test: Glenn Maxwell ‘sways away’ selector with his skills

Maxwell has toured with his national team to the island nation and understands the conditions well. He believes that the selectors have shown faith in him due to his efficiency to play the slow ball in the Sri Lankan conditions. The premier all-rounder has, incidentally, not played a first-class game in two years and eight months amid his significant limited-overs commitments.

“I know it’s specific to my skillset and the way I play slow bowling, especially in these conditions, that might have been something to sway (selectors),” Maxwell told cricket.com.au earlier this month. But I think the way they’ve shown faith in their current squad is brilliant. It’s nice that the door’s not closed but I also thought it was nice that they showed faith in that squad.”
