The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has fired the entire senior men’s selection committee, which was overseen by former Indian cricketer Chetan Sharma. While the supreme cricketing body has welcomed new applications for the five national selector seats, the new selection committee is said to be considering shared captaincy for the national team across formats. The selection committee led by Chetan Sharma was fired after India failed to live up to expectations in big competitions. The team failed to advance to the knockout stages of the T20 World Cup last year, lost the World Test Championship final against New Zealand, and was blasted by eventual champions England in the semi-finals of the recently concluded 2022 T20 World Cup.

According to the most recent reports, the board is expected to pick a fresh captain in the shortest format, with Hardik Pandya set to follow Rohit Sharma. Meanwhile, the current Indian captain is expected to continue leading the Men in Blue in lengthier formats, with the 50-over World Cup approaching. The BCCI has issued a new call for applications for the vacant positions, with a deadline of November 28th. The newly established qualifying criteria for the vacant positions will require applicants to have played at least seven Tests, 30 first-class matches, ten ODIs, and twenty FC matches. The applicants must have retired from the game five years ago.

Split captaincy is not new in Indian cricket as the women’s team was led by two captains; Harmanpreet Kaur in T20Is and Mithali Raj in ODIs till as recently as this year’s WC in New Zealand. The last time India had split captaincy was when MS Dhoni had retired from Test cricket and Kohli took over. Kohli became India’s captain in all three formats only in 2017 when just ahead of the ODI series against England Dhoni resigned from his position.
