All-round Bangladesh defeated South Africa by nine wickets in the third and final ODI at the SuperSport Park, Centurion on Wednesday to clinch the series 2-1. It was a historic moment for the visitors as they clinched their first-ever bilateral ODI series win on the South African soil.

Bangladesh started their ODI campaign with a 38 runs win over South Africa but the hosts bounced back to draw level at 1-1 with a seven-wicket victory in the second match. However, in the series decider, the visitors hardly gave South Africa a sniff as they were bundled out for 154 runs with Bangladesh pace-ace Taskin Ahmed returning figures of 5/35 in his spell of nine overs.

In the chase, Tamim Iqbal (87 not out) played a captain’s knock and was equally complimented by his fellow opener Liton Das (48), as the duo forged an opening stand of 127 runs. All-rounder Shakib Al Hasan (18 not out), later, chipped in with a cameo to help Bangladesh sail over the line.

Bangladesh captain Tamim Iqbal ‘very proud’ of his team

Iqbal was elated on the performance of his side and credited Taskin for his brilliant performance which earned him the man of the series award. He highlighted that the victory will help them believe in doing well in the overseas conditions as well.

“I am very proud, especially with a Bangladesh fast bowler getting Player of the Match and Player of the series. I want to thank all the coaches who have worked with the fast bowlers, they have done a fantastic job. This is our one of the biggest achievement, it’s a massive win. We now believe we can win series overseas, and this win will give us that confidence moving forward. We take a lot of pride in ODI cricket, we believe we are a good side,” Tamim Iqbal said in the post-match interview.

“This is one format where we have been doing well in the last 5-6 years. Winning a series overseas was missing, but we have managed to do that this time. For Shakib to come here and play is massive. Shakib’s family is in the hospital, so I want to thank him for coming here and playing for us. I feel this is like mini Dhaka, the fans have been brilliant. Wherever we go, they are there for us, whether we win or lose. I’m not the Test captain, but we would like to do well there as well. We did well against New Zealand, so we would like to do that here as well.”

Bangladesh will next take on South Africa in the first of the two-match Test series in Durban, starting from March 31.
