Shakib Al Hasan and Tamim Iqbal have been called back into Bangladesh’s Test squad for the upcoming series against South Africa. Tamim missed the New Zealand tour’s Test leg due to multiple thumb injuries, while Shakib opted out for personal reasons. Shakib’s return to Test cricket comes after Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) president Nazmul Hasan stated that the 34-year-old would tour South Africa despite having planned to skip Test cricket for six months.

“Now that he is not going to the IPL, I don’t see any reason why he shouldn’t play the Test series in South Africa,” Hasan had said last Monday.” So forget about it. This is no longer in my mind. The IPL was preventing him from playing [the two Test series], but now he will play [both series].”

Naim, Fazle dropped

Fazle Mahmud and Mohammad Naim, on the other hand, have been dropped from the Test squad. Fazle had previously earned his place in the side due to his outstanding performance in domestic first-class cricket, whereas Naim was a surprise selection because he is more of a T20 specialist. Naim made his Test debut in the second Test in Christchurch, but he failed to make an impression.

Bangladesh retained the ODI squad that defeated Afghanistan 2-0 at home last week. The only addition to the squad is fast bowler Khaled Ahmed, who has no ODI experience. So far, the 29-year-old has only taken one wicket in three Tests. The Tigers will play three One-Day Internationals (ODIs) as part of the World Cup Super League on March 18, 20, and 23, followed by two Tests as part of the World Test Championship on March 31 and April 8.
