The inaugural Under 19 Women’s T20 World Cup, involving 16 countries, will take place in South Africa from January 14 to 29, 2023. Star Indian batter Shafali Verma will lead the Indian squad. Overall, the Indian selectors have chosen a formidable side for the world cup in South Africa. Richa Ghosh, who is expected to keep wickets in the blockbuster event, is also on the roster. Shweta Sehrawat has been appointed as Verma’s deputy after leading the team in the home series against the New Zealand Development squad last week.

India is in Group D with hosts South Africa, the United Arab Emirates, and Scotland. The top three teams in each group will advance to the Super Six round, where they will be split into two groups of three.
Following the round-robin style of the Super Six round, two teams from each group will meet in the semi-finals on January 27 in Potchefstroom. On January 29, the tournament’s championship match will be held at the same location.

Why did Richa and Shafali are in the squad?

The selection of Richa and Shafali has raised eyebrows because they were not in consideration up until the squad announcement. “A team or a group has been playing/being around each other for over 7 months. They’ve formed a bond and established a routine that works for them. Shafali and Richa will join the squad as experienced internationals. That will undoubtedly alter the vibe in the locker room. It also throws off the batting order, causing most batters to bat out of position. This could lead to feelings of insecurity or the need to compete for a spot. Furthermore, Hrishita Basu is a far superior keeper to Richa. She’s also proven to be a valuable hitter down in the order. What does her inclusion imply for Basu?” These were some of the questions raised by former Indian domestic cricketer Ananya Upendran.
