Salman Butt named Singapore consulting head coach

Former Pakistan opener Salman Butt has been named Singapore consulting head coach for 2022 season.

Former Pakistan opener Salman Butt has been roped in by the Singapore Cricket Association (SCA) as their consulting head coach. He will take up the role for the 2022 season and will be assisted by former Pakistan women’s team trainer Jamal Hussain who will work in the role of as fielding coach and trainer. Butt will have major assignments to look over in the first three months as Singapore will look to qualify for the major tournaments.

Salman Butt’s first major role as a coach

Butt, who was banned by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) in 2010 for five-year for his role in match-fixing scandal, will be taking over in his first major role as a coach after calling time on his career in 2020. He tried to make a comeback for the national team after some brilliant performances in the domestic season but his reselection never materialised. He, thus, took up the roles of commentator and analyst in the past. 

The former Pakistan batter will be staying in Singapore during his tenure, according to a report in espncricinfo and will be overlooking the period where the team is scheduled to play the ICC T20 World Cup Qualifiers in Zimbabwe in July, the Asia Cup qualifier in August in Sri Lanka and the ICC Men’s Challenge League A in Canada which will help them qualify for the ICC’s ODI World Cup qualification matches. 

Salman Butt’s recent career as a player

Butt had played for the Lahore Qalandars in 2019. He made appearances in two matches but that didn’t fulfill his desire for reelection in the national team squad. He had opted out of the Quaid-e-Azam trophy in 2020 and later decided to call time on his playing career. He was, however, close to making a comeback in the national team for the T20 World Cup in 2017 but the news of the 2017 spot-fixing scandal saw him out of the final squad.
