According to board sources, there is no imminent threat to Rohit Sharma’s ODI and Test captaincy because the BCCI administration has found nothing unacceptable about his leadership in the traditional formats. The assessment meeting in Mumbai was attended by skipper Rohit and head coach Rahul Dravid. Jay Shah, the BCCI secretary, presided over the meeting on Sunday, January 1. The review meeting was also attended by the chairman of the previous selection committee, Chetan Sharma, NCA head VVS Laxman, and president Roger Binny. Because the focus was on the World Test Championships (WTC), where India has a decent chance of reaching the finals, and the 2023 ODI World Cup, new T20 captain Hardik Pandya was not present. Hardik is in Mumbai for the T20Is against Sri Lanka, which starts on January 3rd.

“Rohit is leading India in Tests and ODIs and there were no such discussions about his future as a leader in these two formats. Look at his captaincy record in Tests and ODIs and it is more than impressive,” a BCCI source privy to the development told PTI on the condition of anonymity. It was also determined that a pool of 20 players would be rotated until the World Cup in 2023. Sharma, who attended the review meeting on Sunday, might reclaim his chairmanship of the senior national selection panel in what could be a significant decision by the board. If not chairman, he will most likely be the North Zone representative. Former India bowler Venkatesh Prasad’s name is also making the rounds in the South Zone, but his inclusion on the panel is far from inevitable. Sharma’s inclusion in the roadmap planning for the 2023 ODI World Cup is a significant milestone.

A year to forget for India in 2022

2022 was not the honeymoon season that either Rohit Sharma, the new men’s captain, or Rahul Dravid, the new coach, had planned for. Losing a Test series in South Africa, losing the decided Test series in England, exiting early from the Asia Cup, losing in the T20 World Cup semi-finals in Australia, and losing an ODI series to Bangladesh in Bangladesh, especially after the thrilling victory in the Australian Test series in 2021 made headlines last year.
