The 13th match of the ongoing Indian Premier League between Gujarat Titans and Kolkata Knight Riders saw an unbelievable finish on the back of Rinku Singh’s heroics, who smashed five sixes of the last fives balls and snatched victory from the jaws of defeat. Yash Dayal was at the receiving end as he was unable to defend 29 runs in the last over, he missed his line and length and got punished by the southpaw. The Aligarh-born has been waiting for his chance for the past five years and now has made full use of the opportunity by singlehandedly taking Kolkata Knight Riders over the line in an improbable chase. No team had ever chased down more than 23 runs in the final over to win and today history was re-written by Umesh Yadav and Rinku Singh who smoked 29 of the last over.

Another rags-to-riches story unfolds in the IPL

Rinku Singh was born on the 12th of October, 1997 in Aligarh, a small town in Uttar Pradesh, he comes from a humble background. Rinku’s father, Khanchandra Singh, delivers gas cylinders for a living in Alighar and has worked immensely hard over the years to change the financial situation of his family. Rinku Singh lives in a tiny two-bedroom house with his parents and four brothers, his family has seen some tough times over the year but the glamourous Indian Premier League has helped him rise from rags to riches. Singh was picked up in the 2017 IPL auction by the Kings XI Punjab for a sum of INR 10 lakh and a year later he was bagged by the Kolkata Knight Riders for a sum of INR 80 lakh, four times more than his base price of INR 20 lakh.

From sweeping floors to sweeping bowlers

One of Rinku’s older brothers, Mukul Singh, works at a local coaching centre and the oldest brother, Sonu Singh, used to work as an autorickshaw driver. There was a point in Rinku’s life when he had to work as a sweeper to support his family in overcoming their financial situation and aid his cricket needs. Rinku has been one of the most hard-working cricketers in the Indian domestic circuit over the year and it is getting paid off as his career is bound to take an upward direction after the sensational knock against Gujarat Titans. Rinku has shown glimpses of what he is capable of and the Indian cap won’t be far away if he continues to play in the same fashion.
