Sakibul Ghani of Bihar created history as he became the first individual in the history of First-Class cricket to score a triple century on debut in the Ranji Trophy match against Mizoram.
The first week of the Ranji Trophy 2022 has already seen plenty of records being created. Yash Dhull joined Sachin Tendulkar, Amol Muzumdar, Rohit Sharma, Ajay Rohera, and Prithvi Shaw in scoring a century on First-Class debut. Ajinkya Rahane scored a century against Saurashtra as he tried to ensure he was not dropped from the Test team for the Sri Lanka series. In the history of the Ranji Trophy, Amol Muzumdar was the first individual to score a double century on Ranji Trophy debut in 1993. Now, 29 years later, another individual has created a record in the Ranji Trophy.
In the Plate Division match between Bihar and Mizoram at the Jadavpur University Campus in Kolkata, Sakibul Ghani of Bihar created history. Ghani became the first individual in the history of First-Class cricket to score a triple century on debut. Bihar was reduced to 71/3 after they opted to bat. But, that was the only amount of success that Mizoram achieved after the strikes of G Lalbiakvela of Remruatdika Ralte. After Taruwar Kohli dismissed Lakhan Raja, Sakibul Ghani and Babul Kumar shared a magnificent partnership. Hailing from Motihari in Bihar, Ghani blasted 56 fours and two sixes while Babul Kumar hit 27 fours and one six. They shared a stand of 538 which is also another record. Here is the best fourth-wicket stand in the history of First-Class Cricket
Runs | Batters | Team | Opposition | Year | Venue |
577 | Vijay Hazare, Gul Mahomed | Baroda | Holkar | 1946/47 | Baroda |
574* | Clyde Walcott, Frank Worrell | Barbados | Trinidad | 1945/46 | Port of Spain |
538 | Babul Kumar, Sakibul Ghani | Bihar | Mizoram | 2022 | Kolkata |
504 | Frank Worrell, John Goddard | Barbados | Trinidad | 1943/44 | Bridgetown |
Bihar notched up 686/5 declared as Mizoram’s bowlers suffered. However, Taruwar Kohli smashed a century and he was given great support by Uday Kaul who hit 96. Kohli hit 132 which included 22 fours. Kaul was unlucky to have missed out on a century as he was dismissed by Sachin Kumar. The 214-run stand between Kohli and Kaul ensured that Mizoram could escape with a draw in the match.
Congratulations to Sakibul Gani for a solid performance in his debut Ranji Trophy match.
