Mumbai batters Suved Parkar (252) and Sarfaraz Khan (152) called the shots for their state team in the Ranji Trophy 2021-22 quarter-finals to pile misery on Uttarakhand bowlers after declaring their first innings at a mammoth 647/8 at the A Cricket (2) Ground, Alur on Tuesday. Parkar etched his name in history books as he became the only second batter in Mumbai cricket history to score a double century in his Ranji Trophy debut while Khan continued his fine run in the prestigious tournament to score another fine century.

Ranji Trophy 2022: How Suved Parkar broke into Mumbai squad

Parkar smashed 21 boundaries and four sixes in his 447-ball marathon knock for Mumbai. His shots during the history-making innings included cut, upper-cut and the lofted-drives against the seamers. It was also visible that he prefers to work his wrists to time the ball behind the square-leg quite often.

However, his batting prowess first came to the fore after he smashed three hundreds in four games, in a local A division tournament. He later received a call-up for the Mumbai under-25 squad following a hundred which helped the age group team clinch the prestigious under-25 CK Nayudu Trophy. The knock also displayed his grit under pressure as he took his team home after they were reeling at 50/6 by adding 194 runs with Shams Mulani.

Ranji Trophy 2022: Suved Parkar chose cricket over academics

The good thing about Parkar’s family was they never interfered in his cricketing dreams. After receiving a call from Mumbai coach Dinesh Lad, following his first trial, his parents agreed to put his academics behind cricket and the dividends are paying off. Lad was the catalyst behind the rise of Parkar.

“I told them please don’t ever try to stop the child from playing cricket. Academics can take a back seat for a while as I feel that he has something in him to become a good cricketer. Their parents agreed and the best part about his family was that their parents never interfered in his cricket,” Lad recalled in an interview to the Indian Express.
