As a youngster, KL Rahul would have been known as KL Rohan. His father was a big fan of Sunil Gavaskar and he wanted to name his son after Gavaskar’s son Rohan. But, he misunderstood his name as Rahul Gavaskar. Thus, he became KL Rahul. As a youngster, Rahul made his first impression in the 2010 Under-19 World Cup in New Zealand. Although India did not make it to the knockout stage, Rahul had impressed. But, it was in the Indian Domestic Circuit which paved the way for Rahul’s International stardom. Karnataka was enjoying a dominant run in the middle of the second decade. In 2013, Rahul smashed 1033 runs and helped Karnataka win the Ranji Trophy final.
It was the Ranji Trophy exploits that saw Rahul get fast-tracked into the Indian cricket team. His debut was in the cauldron of the Melbourne Cricket Ground on Boxing Day. Rahul was clearly nervous and it showed. He made scores of 3 and 1, playing two bad shots which raised doubts over his temperament. But, all those doubts were silenced in the very next Test when he smashed a century as an opener. That knock in Sydney in 2015 was a sign that KL Rahul belonged in Indian cricket. For the next six years, KL Rahul became the mainstay. His rapid rise was confirmed in 2022 when he was appointed as the captain of the ODI team in South Africa after Rohit Sharma was injured.
KL Rahul made his Test debut against Australia in Melbourne in 2014. His ODI and T20I debuts came against Zimbabwe in Harare in 2016.
KL Rahul created history when he became the first Indian player to score a century on ODI debut. His 100* against Zimbabwe in Harare, immediately after the Sydney century showed his mettle. Rahul became the second individual after Suresh Raina to hit a century in all formats of the game. He is behind only Rohit Sharma for the most number of centuries scored in Twenty20 International cricket for India.
His aggressive batting at the top has gone a long way in India’s wonderful performances in overseas countries. In the last couple of years, Rahul has been India’s prolific scorer in South Africa and England. In 2021, Rahul etched his name on the Lord’s Honours Board with a fantastic century. During the Centurion Test, Rahul smashed 123 in Centurion as India became the first Asian Nation to win in Centurion.
Rahul has formed a prolific opening pair with Rohit Sharma in ODIs. In the 2019 ICC World Cup, he hit 77 and 111 against Bangladesh and Sri Lanka as India dominated the league stages. In the last couple of years, Rahul’s penchant for big scores has increased. His most memorable knock came in 2016 when he smashed 110* at the No.4 position and almost helped India chase down 245.
In the IPL, the last five years has seen Rahul dominate the league unlike any batsman. After a poor run with the Sunrisers Hyderabad team in 2013, he was part of the Royal Challengers Bangalore side that saw Virat Kohli smash 973 runs in 2016. He contributed 397 runs at an average of 44. But, from 2018 onwards, Rahul has smashed 659, 670 and 626 runs at an average in excess of 50. In this period, he has hit 23 fifties and two hundreds to show his worth
