He hails from a rich cricketing pedigree in the Caribbean. His relative is the Prince of Trinidad. His half-brother is also one of the greatest Twenty20 players of all time. When you have Brian Lara and Dwayne Bravo as your relatives, one can be forgiven for getting overwhelmed. But, Darren Bravo has somehow managed to carve a niche among West Indies batsmen. If one looks at the way how Darren Bravo bats, you can be mistaken for thinking Brian Lara was reincarnated. That same backlift, the flamboyance minus the footwork makes Darren Bravo one of the most exciting cricketers in the Caribbean.
But, the journey might have not been an easy one for Darren Bravo. He has been with the West Indies team in the toughest times of their transition. When every other player was being lured by the Twenty20 leagues all over the world, Darren Bravo has stayed back and become one of the most dependable players in the Test arena. When he started out in his international career, there was a problem of conversion. The fifties were attractive but the hundreds were not coming.
Over the course of time, Darren Bravo corrected the mistake and started converting big scores. In the Test and ODI arena, Darren Bravo managed to be the pillar of West Indies’ batting. His batting in the sub-continent is what makes him a standout. He employs the sweep and plays the spinners incredibly well. Having undergone so much in his career, Darren Bravo has carved his name in West Indies cricket in a good way.
Darren Bravo made his international debut in 2009 during the ODI series against India. His Test and T20I debut came a year later. His Test debut came against Sri Lanka in Galle in 2010, in that same match that saw Chris Gayle score a triple century. His T20I debut came against Zimbabwe in Port of Spain in which Zimbabwe bowled the West Indies out for under 100.
Darren Bravo made a good first impression in the Test match arena when he averaged over 50 in the series against Sri Lanka. In 2011, there was a confounding crossroad in his career. He was picked in the Deccan Chargers for IPL 2011 but he did not play a game due to international commitments. He never recovered from that commitment and has never been picked in the IPL since. Darren Bravo has a record in ODI cricket. He shared a stand of 258 with Denesh Ramdin in the series against Bangladesh in St Kitts.
In the Test match arena, he once hit a double hundred against New Zealand in Dunedin in 2013. That match saw West Indies hold on for a draw in a country where they have never tasted much success. Out of his eight hundreds, seven have come away from the West Indies. Most of the tons have come in Asia.
Darren Bravo was included in the Deccan Chargers side for IPL 2011 but he did not play a game. He did play in some games for Sunrisers Hyderabad but he did not get much success. He has plied his trade for several Twenty20 franchises, which include the Multan Sultans, Comilla Victorians, and Trinbago Knight Riders. For the Trinbago Knight Riders, he has been the ultimate finisher. One of the most memorable knocks came when he hit a last-ball six in one of the CPL games. His average of 31 in 165 T20 games is good but he has not converted it into a big score in international cricket.
