His three centuries against England in 2016 Under-19 World Cup and a bilateral series already made him a star. But, in 2016, in the rigours of international cricket, he was dismissed for 0 by Mitchell Starc. After a three-year lull, prior to the ICC World Cup 2019, Avishka sparkled. With the baggage of most runs and centuries in the history of Youth cricket behind, Avishka Fernando was one of the stars that had many people excited.
In the ICC World Cup 2019, he showed his mettle in a big way. During the match against Scotland, he hit a fifty. As the tournament progressed, he impressed everybody with his century against the West Indies in Durham. It was that knock that forced Sri Lanka legend Kumar Sangakkara to remark that he has a bright future. It was against the West Indies where Avishka Fernando had plenty of success. He smashed 127 and shared a stand of 239 with Kusal Mendis. With the likes of Pathum Nissanka and Dasun Shanaka emerging and guiding Sri Lanka well, Avishka Fernando could be the future that Sri Lanka would look upto for stability and aggression.
