In the first ODI in Auckland, Tom Latham and Kane Williamson set a record partnership and easily chased down India’s total of 306 runs. The Kiwis lead the series 1-0 and will look to close down the series in the second ODI. Washington Sundar’s overall performance for India was encouraging. Let us take a look at the key match-ups before the 2nd ODI.

Iyer vs Ferguson

It’s no wonder that Iyer struggles with short balls. Ferguson is New Zealand’s fastest bowler, and he might be introduced into the attack as soon as Iyer comes out to bat. Even in the first ODI, the Mumbai batsman was bombarded with short balls, which he handled admirably. Iyer faced 16 balls from Ferguson in the first ODI and hit 13 runs, including a six. In the second T20I, Iyer was out hit-wicket to Ferguson, most likely anticipating a short ball. Surprisingly, Ferguson has only ever dismissed Iyer once in professional cricket.

Southee vs Dhawan

Southee may have taken Dhawan’s wicket in the first ODI, but the Indian batsman has a strong record against the Kiwi pacer. In one-day internationals, the Delhi hitter has scored 117 runs in 107 balls against Southee at a strike rate of 109.3, being removed only three times. If the conditions permit, Dhawan will try to get India off to a quick start.

Sundar vs Conway

In this white ball series, Conway has battled against Sundar. He scored three runs off five balls against Sundar in the T20Is and was removed once. He faced 12 balls in the first ODI but only scored four runs. It won’t be surprising if the Indian skipper sends Sundar directly into the attacking zone against Conway.
