The BCCI’s new pay equity policy, according to Jay Shah, the organization’s secretary, will ensure that India’s centrally contracted women cricketers receive the same match fees as their male counterparts for playing in international matches. According to this strategy, the women will receive INR 15 lakh for a Test, INR 6 lakh for an ODI, and INR 3 lakh for a T20I. Previously, they received a flat salary of INR 1 lakh for an appearance in an ODI or T20 match and INR 2.5 lakh for a Test match.

Jemimah Rodrigues who is playing for Melbourne Stars in WBBL was asked about this by the host broadcasters during a rain interruption on October 31 during the Melbourne Stars vs Sydney Thunder game. She said that she is indeed happy that the Board is moving towards equal pay, “It’s a very good move by the board and it’s going to help women’s sports in India, it’s not easy honestly as a lot of girls provide for their families single handedly. Now parents can actually let their girls go and play cricket and the sport can be looked as a career option”, she said.

There has been no change in annual contracts

The annual retainers paid by the BCCI to female players have not yet altered. Retainers currently earn between INR 30 lakh and INR 10 lakh for those in Grade B and C, and INR 50 lakh for those in the highest tier. When it comes to male cricketers, there are four categories, with Grade A+ players receiving INR 7 crore and Grades A, B, and C players earning INR 5 crore, INR 3 crore, and INR 1 crore, respectively.

Indian women have enjoyed a great deal of success lately. They trounced England 3-0 in an ODI series in England in September after winning the silver medal at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in August. India won the Asia Cup in Bangladesh for a record-tying sixth time earlier this month after defeating Sri Lanka. Then, in November and December, they will host Australia for five Twenty20 internationals. The T20 World Cup, which will be held in South Africa the following year, will be the next major competition.
