LPL: Jaffna Kings beat Kandy Warriors by 7 wickets in rain-curtailed match

Jaffna Kings defeated Kandy Warriors by 7 wickets via the DLS method in a rain-curtailed match in the Lanka Premier League on Sunday. After being asked to bat first, Warriors’ opener Charith Asalanka scored 44 runs in 34 balls to help his team post 94/2 in 12.2 overs. The rain caused a stoppage in the match, ending Kandy Warriors’ innings at that point, and by the DLS method, Jaffna Kings were asked to chase down 95 runs in 10 overs.

Jaffna Kings got off to a solid start in the chase with Avishka Fernando scoring 23 runs in 12 balls at a strike rate of 191.67, helping his team cross the 50-run mark in just 5 overs. But Fernando and Tom Kohler-Cadmore were dismissed in quick succession, as Kings found themselves reeling at 52/3 in 5.1 overs. But veteran cricketer Shoaib Malik and Jaffna skipper Thisara Perera kept cool heads and stitched an unbeaten 43-run stand to chase down the target in 8.4 overs and helped the team pick up a big win. While Malik scored 14* in 9 balls, Perera scored 29* in 13 balls in the chase. Malik, who had also registered figures of 19/1 in his 3 overs with the ball, was named man of the match for his allround performance.

Angelo Mathews helps Colombo Stars beat Galle Gladiators by 41 runs

Angelo Mathews returned from an injury to lead Colombo Stars to a much-needed 41-run win over Galle Gladiators, with a 57-ball 73 in Lanka Premier League (LPL) 2021 match on Sunday at the R. Premadasa Stadium. After electing to bat first, Colombo Stars captain Mathews opened the innings and helped his team in posting a solid total of 162/7 in the rain-curtailed 18-over match. He hit 8 boundaries and 3 sixes in his innings. The Colombo Stars innings was also bolstered by Dinesh Chandimal who made 36 off 14, smashing 4 fours and 2 sixes in his innings. In reply, Galle Gladiators were bowled out for 121 in 16.5 overs with Stars pacer Naveen ul-Haq claiming 3 for 27, suffering their second successive defeat in two days.

Kusal Mendis scored 64 runs in 39 balls, with 7 fours and a six in the chase. But he found no support from the remainder of the Galle Gladiators’ batting order. Seekuge Prasanna, who took 2 for 23, and Ravi Rampaul, who picked 2 for 34, also contributed with the ball for Colombo Stars as they picked up only their second win of the season.

South African leg-spinner Imran Tahir has been in good touch, taking four wickets in four matches for the Dambulla Giants in the ongoing season of the Lanka Premier League. Tahir revealed that he enjoys sharing his knowledge with the youngsters in the competition. “I get a lot of joy from sharing my knowledge with youngsters. If they come and ask me something, then I feel it’s my duty to share my knowledge with them and I want to make a difference,” Imran Tahir added, as per a press release.

“The Lanka Premier League has provided a great platform for the local talent to showcase their skills. Players like Wanindu Hasaranga has gone on to become one of the most sought-after players in franchise leagues around the world,” said the leg-spinner, who has taken 424 wickets in 338 T20 matches.
