IPL 2021: Kolkata Knight Riders achieve rare century after win versus Sunrisers Hyderabad

Kolkata Knight Riders became the third team after Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings to win 100 matches in the Indian Premier League after beating the Sunrisers Hyderabad.

Kolkata Knight Riders started their IPL 2021 campaign on an ultimate high. The two-time champions beat the Sunrisers Hyderabad in a high-scoring clash. Kolkata Knight Riders scored 187/6, which was their highest against Sunrisers Hyderabad. In response, Kolkata Knight Riders bowlers chipped in as they won by 10 runs. However, the win resulted in the team entering an elite list. Kolkata Knight Riders became the third team after Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings to win 100 matches. Mumbai Indians have the most wins in the IPL with 118 followed by Chennai Super Kings with 106. 

In 193 matches, Kolkata Knight Riders have won 100 matches, with 90 losses and three no results. Out of all the three, Kolkata Knight Riders have the lowest winning percentage. The two-time champions have a winning percentage of 52.33, while Chennai Super Kings have the best with 59.49 followed by Mumbai Indians with 58.82.

Kolkata Knight Riders make statement

Kolkata Knight Riders are the two-time IPL champions, having won in 2012 and 2014. In the past, they have entered the knockout stages but have stumbled. Kolkata Knight Riders’ horror stat against Mumbai Indians, in which they have lost 21 out of 27 encounters is a sore point.

Nitish Rana hit 80 off 56 balls and he got great support by Rahul Tripathi. The duo’s 93-run stand boosted KKR and they managed to hold on despite a late blitz from Manish Pandey and Jonny Bairtsow. 

Speaking after the match, Kolkata Knight Riders skipper Eoin Morgan said key decisions are made behind the dressing room in order to get results on the field. “Huge amount of structure that goes into the decisions on the field. Have got a fantastic head coach in McCullum. Great back room staff. Main job is to get the best out of the squad. IPL is all about the results. Guys buying into what we want to do. Bhajji (Harbhajan Singh) starting really well in the first over. He used his experience to get around the guys in the game shows the selflessness in the side,” Morgan said.

Kolkata Knight Riders will take on Mumbai Indians on April 13 at the MA Chidambaram stadium. Sunrisers Hyderabad will take on Royal Challengers Bangalore on April 14 at the same venue.
