Virat Kohli stunned the Indian cricket fan and the cricketing world when he announced his decision to step down from the Test captaincy. India’s quest for Mission World Domination ended when they lost the Test series to South Africa 2-1. After winning the Centurion Test, India lost the Johannesburg and Cape Town Test by seven wickets. This was the second time in 15 years that India squandered a 0-1 lead in South Africa to lose. In the aftermath of the Cape Town loss, Virat Kohli stepped down as the Test captain.

In a post on his social media, Kohli stated that he had given 120 percent on the field but all things had to come to an end. This bought an end to Kohli’s seven-year tenure as captain. For the first time since 2012, Kohli will not be captain in any format for any side. Speaking about the decision, Jasprit Bumrah gave the inside details of how it all transpired.

In the virtual press conference, Jasprit Bumrah stated, “I am not here to give a judgment on Virat’s decision to leave the Test captaincy. It is a personal decision. We respect his decision. He knows how his body is reacting and what frame of mind he is in. I respect that, it has been an immense pleasure to play under Virat Kohli, I made my Test debut under him. He brings a lot of energy to the side. He will always be a leader in the group and his contribution has always been immense,” Bumrah said.

Under Virat Kohli, India jumped up from seventh right to the top. India has been winning consistently in overseas conditions, especially in Australia. Kohli became the first Indian captain to win a series in Australia. In 68 Tests, Kohli won 40 and statistically has emerged as one of the greatest captains of all time.

“Virat has been the leader of our team. He is energy-driven and he has brought a lot of change to Indian cricket. Everybody got fitter in the team, his contribution has been immense. He is a very important player in the group, his assistance, and knowledge of the game would always be used by the team. He will add inputs and suggestions, we all look up to him,” Bumrah said.

With the Test series done, India will now play South Africa in three ODIs. The matches will take place at Paarl and Cape Town. In the previous limited-overs series, India defeated South Africa 5-1 in the ODIs and 2-1 in the T20Is.
