IPL Auctions 2023: Delhi Capitals considering to release Shardul Thakur: Reports

Thakur took 15 wickets in 14 games this season but was expensive as he gave away runs at more than 9 per over. With the bat, he could only score 120 runs at a 15-run average.

The IPL mini-auction for the 2023 season is poised to take place in a few weeks, and several franchises have been cutting down their retentions for next year’s cash-rich competition. The Delhi Capitals are expected to release some of their key players, including KS Bharat, Tim Seifert, and Shardul Thakur, according to sources. Notably, Thakur was purchased by the Delhi-based franchise in the mega auction earlier this year for a high fee of INR 10.75 crore. Thakur took 15 wickets in 14 games this season but was expensive as he gave away runs at more than 9 per over. With the bat, he could only score 120 runs at a 15-run average. DC expected more of him considering he had a breakthrough 2nd half of IPL 2021 with CSK.

There was a possibility for the Mumbaikar to be transferred before the auction, but deals could not be concluded in time for him. The 31-year-old is currently an essential member of the Indian team and has travelled to Australia as a cover for the fast bowlers in the present T20 World Cup 2022. However, as the Delhi Capitals look to release him, he is likely to go into the mini-auction. It is to be noted that each franchise will have only 5 crores extra for this mini-auction along with whatever was remaining after the mega auction. Since Thakur was bought for over 10 crores, DC might be looking to buy him back at a lower price.

Other players who might be released

Meanwhile, the franchise plans to release Ashwin Hebbar, Mandeep Singh, Tim Seifert, and KS Bharat with Thakur. Hebbar did not play in the competition the last season, while the other hitters failed to make an impact in the few opportunities they had in Delhi Capitals colours. Seifert and Bharat are both wicketkeeper-batters, so if they opt to release them, they will need a backup for Rishabh Pant. In the absence of David Warner, Seifert could not do much in the first few games of IPL 2022 while Mandeep Singh had a horrible outing whenever he came out to bat. With Yash Dhull having a breakthrough season with Delhi in the domestic circuit, he might get an opportunity to play in the XI in the upcoming season.
