The 2023 edition of the Indian Premier League is upon us and this season promises to be bigger and better than ever. After an exciting mini auction in Kochi last year, the 10 franchises have made exciting new additions to their respective squads. While some have truly improved their lineups, there are teams that really haven't done as much as they should have. Defending champions Gujarat Titans will be looking to become only the third franchise to retain their IPL crown, while the usual suspects like Mumbai Indians, Chennai Super Kings and Kolkata Knight Riders will look to add to their trophy cabinets.
Over the past few seasons, the IPL was played over a limited number of venues due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Mumbai and Pune were the host cities last season. However, 2023 will see the teams return to their respective home grounds and this will certainly be an exciting matter for the players and fans. There are a slew of new rules as well which are as follows:
Table of contents: |
Five-time winners Mumbai Indians (MI) is the most successful team in the history of the Indian Premier League (IPL) and they will be looking to add a sixth to their trophy cabinet in 2023. Many would suggest that the men in blue have the best team on paper, and they would be making a valid point. However, MI having a strong team has always been the case over the years, which is why they are so successful. Although the 2022 season was one to forget, MI have won the IPL more than anyone. Their most recent victory came in 2020 when they beat Delhi Capitals (DC) in the final by five wickets.

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) is one of the strongest teams in the history of the Indian Premier League (IPL). The men in yellow have consistently made it into the playoff stages in the tournament, barring the 2020 and 2022 seasons. The four-time IPL winners have been led by MS Dhoni for the entirety of their existence and this season will not be any difference. Their most recent success came in 2021 when they beat Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in the final to lift their fourth IPL crown, becoming the second most successful franchise in the tournament’s history after Mumbai Indians (MI).

Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) is one of those teams which has one of the largest fan bases in the Indian Premier League (IPL). However, fans of the purple and gold brigade have been thirsting for a title for almost a decade now. KKR’s last success came way back in 2014 when Gautam Gambhir was the skipper. The team did reach the final of 2021 edition but were defeated by the Chennai Super Kings (CSK). The following season was one to forget for the Kolkata-based franchise as they could only finish in seventh place in the league, failing to make it to the playoffs.

While the 2022 season was not great for the SunRisers Hyderabad (SRH), there comes a lot of promise with the 2023 Indian Premier League (IPL) season. They have made smart moves in the market and attained the services of players who can make a massive impact in the tournament. The team will be lead by South African cricket player Aiden Markram, who will be making his debut in the tournament as the skipper. SRH made quite a few interesting buys at the mini auction last year, roping in the likes of Mayank Agarwal and Harry Brooks, both of who are exceptional at their craft and can prove to be of great value to the team as they head into the tournament.

Rajasthan Royals were one win away from clinching the IPL Trophy last season, to make the team stronger they purchased nine players in the IPL auction held in December 2023. Rajasthan Royal won the inaugural edition of the Indian Premier League but hasn’t been able to replicate the same kind of performance in the next 14 years. Rajasthan Royals entered the mini-auction with a purse of ₹13.20 crore and managed to fill up all their nine slots and were still left with a purse of ₹3.35 crore. The Royals managed to bag some exciting players like the West Indies all-rounder Jason Holder, he was Rajasthan’s biggest purchase at the auction, getting picked for ₹5.75 crores.

It is one thing to win a tournament once, it is a completely different thing to defend that crown. For the Gujarat Titans (GT), their second season in the Indian Premier League (IPL) will undoubtedly prove to be a lot harder than their first. Harsha Bhogle said it best in an program with CricBuzz. The Gujarat Titans felt like a team of misfits, of players that no other franchise really wanted. Yet, something clicked for them in 2022, and the team led by Hardik Pandya defied all the odds to be crowned IPL champions in their very first season in the league. The only other franchise to have done that is Rajasthan Royals in the inaugural season of the biggest franchise cricket competition in the world.

For as long as the Indian Premier League (IPL) started, Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) have been the perennial underachievers. Every year, they boast a squad that can beat any opponent in the world, yet, they come up short every time. They reached the finals on three different occasions, 2009, 2011 and 2016, yet they have never successfully managed to go that extra mile and get their hands on the trophy. On paper, this year is no different as they have assembled an exceptional squad which could be one of the most well-balanced in the whole league.

Delhi Capitals (DC) will come into the 2023 edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) after being dealt two massive blows. First was the injury to Mitchell Marsh which saw him sit out last year’s edition of the BBL. It is uncertain if the Aussie will be at his best in the IPL, although his performance in the Border-Gavaskar trophy was quite impressive. The second blow is the unavailability of their regular skipper Rishabh Pant. Pant was involved in a nasty accident towards the end of last year and will be out of action for the time being. David Warner will replace the Indian wicket-keeper as the Capitals’ skipper.

Formerly known as the Kings XI Punjab, Punjab Kings (PBKS) are a franchise that has had to deal with a lot of bad luck throughout their time so far in the Indian Premier League (IPL). One positive going into the 2023 season is that they seem to have a balanced 25-man-squad and perhaps have the best chance of finally getting their hands on the trophy. The team is led by Shikhar Dhawan, who definitely has a point to prove ahead of the T20 world cup. His batting and leadership skills will be put to the test and the Indian opener will be looking to deliver on all fronts and give the Punjab faithful their first ever IPL glory.

Despite making it into the playoff stages in heir very first season, the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) failed to make it to the final of the Indian Premier League (IPL) in 2022. This time, the franchise has made attempts to improve their squad and while they have been successful in doing that in certain areas, there are still some aspects where they need to improve. The team appears to have improved after adding players like West Indies hitter Nicholas Pooran for INR 16 crores during the auction. For a base price of INR 50 Lakh, LSG also attained the services of Amit Mishra, the oldest player to participate in the auction. For the upcoming season, veteran pacer Jaydev Unadkat will also be available, and the team will try to capitalise on his expertise.
