The Delhi Capitals’ coaching staff churning has begun in IPL 2022. Ajit Agarkar, the former India pace bowler, has been appointed as the assistant coach of the side. According to an IPL source which was quoted by PTI, he confirmed the development. Apparently, Ajit Agarkar will join the franchise after he has finished his commentary duties in the series against Sri Lanka.

Delhi Capitals, under captain Rishabh Pant and head coach Ricky Ponting, are wanting to build a superb backroom staff. James Hopes continues to remain in the Delhi Capitals coaching staff. There was earlier speculation that Shane Watson might join the Delhi Capitals side as an assistant coach. But, there was no official confirmation. Agarkar has played 26 Tests, 191 ODIs, and four T20Is in his playing career. In the past, he has played for Delhi Daredevils in the IPL.

Agarkar has been instrumental in some memorable wins for India in the late 90s and first decade of the 21st century. His 6/41 against Australia in Adelaide helped India break a 22-year jinx in Tests Down Under. In his 191 ODIs, he has taken 288 wickets at an amazing average of 27.85. He was India’s premier strike-bowler in that period. It was his high economy rate of 5.07 that went against Agarkar.

Delhi Capitals Aim to Break Title Drought in IPL 2022

Delhi Capitals and Punjab Kings are the only teams in the current old roster that have not won an IPL title. The Capitals have struggled to make an impact in the IPL. In 2008 and 2009 when they were Delhi Daredevils, they reached the semis and failed to win. From 2010 to 2018, they consistently were in the middle or at the bottom of the table in IPL.

When they were rebranded as Delhi Capitals, they reached the playoffs in 2019. They reached the final in IPL 2020 where they lost to Mumbai Indians in the summit clash. In IPL 2021, they once again reached the second qualifier where they lost to Kolkata Knight Riders. In the previous IPL, Delhi Capitals were one ball away from reaching the final but a last-ball six dented their hopes.

Under the captaincy of Rishabh Pant, Delhi Capitals will be determined to break their title jinx in IPL 2022. The tournament is slated to begin on March 27 and the matches might be played in Mumbai and Pune. The official fixtures have not yet been released but it is expected to come out in the next few days
