In a major setback for Rajasthan Royals (RR), Ben Stokes has been ruled out for the remaining matches of the ongoing edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) following a broken finger. Stokes sustained the injury in the Rajasthan-based franchise’s opening match of the 2021 season against Punjab Kings (PBKS). The 29-year-old ran in from long-on to complete a catch off a mishit by Chris Gayle, following an astute delivery by Riyan Parag in the 10th over of the first innings. He failed to complete the catch cleanly, costing the franchise which seems heavily dependent on Stokes dear.

“Ben Stokes has been ruled out of the IPL following a broken finger in last night’s game. He will stay with the Royals and support the rest of the group in the upcoming matches. #RoyalsFamily | @benstokes38,” read the message from the official Twitter handle of the Rajasthan Royals.

Seriousness of injury to be determined

The seriousness of Stokes’ injury will be determined in the next few days. An ECB medical team and a UK hand specialist is monitoring the situation.

“We are aware (of Stokes’ injury) and he will be assessed over the coming days on the extent of the seriousness of the injury. At that point, we will confirm the next steps,” said an ECB spokesperson as quoted by Sky Sports.

“In addition, ECB medical and our UK hand specialist consultant are both involved,” he added.

The Rajasthan-based franchise will take on Delhi Capitals in their next league fixture of IPL 2021. Skipper Sanju Samson will be looking to lead his side on to their maiden win in the ongoing edition, having come so close in their opening match.
