Team India has been largely dependent on its triumvirate of Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and KL Rahul in the recent times across formats. However, the Indian team, will be without the services of their stalwarts Sharma and Kohli in the five-match T20I series against South Africa, starting on June 9. Rahul will, meanwhile, lead the Men in Blue with rising India wicket keeper-batter Rishabh Pant named as his deputy.

Sharma and Kohli have been rested for the upcoming series. The duo had a poor run in the IPL 2022. The Mumbai Indians captain amassed only 268 runs in IPL 2022 with one half-century while Kohli endured a tough time which saw him recording three golden ducks in the season. Rahul, meanwhile, was amongst the runs for LSG but his slow approach raised a few eyebrows.

‘They’ve big reputation’: Kapil Dev slams Team India triumvirate for poor approach

1983 World Cup winning Indian captain Kapil Dev slammed the trio for their poor approach under pressure. The legendary all-rounder highlighted that the trio should adapt a more fearless approach during testing times. He also wants Rahul to change his batting approach and play more selflessly.

“They have a big reputation and there’s huge pressure on them, which shouldn’t be the case. You have to play fearless cricket. They are players who can hit at a strike rate of 150-160. Whenever we need them to score runs, they all get out. When it is time to take off (in the innings) they are out. And that adds to the pressure. Either you play an anchor or you play striker,” Kapil Dev said on the YouTube channel Uncut.

“When you talk about KL Rahul, if the team tells him to play the entire 20 overs and you come back with a score of, say 60 not out, you’re not doing justice to your team. I think the approach needs to change. And if it doesn’t, you have to change the players. A big player is expected to make a big impact. Having a big reputation is not enough, you also have to deliver great performances,” added Kapil.
