Indian fast bowlers dominated the proceedings on Day 2 with Jasprit Bumrah being the wrecker-in-chief with his five-wicket haul to bowl out South Africa for 210 runs, allowing India to take a slender 13 runs lead. His fast bowling partners Mohammed Shami and Umesh Yadav also helped the cause by picking up two wickets each while Shardul Thakur picked up a wicket after his fine-run in the previous Test. South Africa, however, continued to pile misery on KL Rahul (10) and  Mayank Agarwal (7) as the openers were sent packing without troubling the scoreboard much.  Following their dismissals, India Test captain Virat Kohli (14 not out) and specialist Cheteshwar Pujara (9 not out) steadied the ship for the visitors as they ended the day on 57/2, with a healthy 70 runs lead.

Kohli and Pujara will resume Day 3 with their unbeaten 33 run-stand for the third wicket. Kohli, the highest run scorer for India in the ongoing Test, has hit two boundaries in his 39-ball knock so far while Pujara also hit as many fours after consuming 31 balls.

For South Africa, fast bowlers Kagiso Rabada and Marco Jansen, picked up a wicket each.

Bumrah picks up seventh five-wicket haul

Bumrah ran through the South African batting line-up, picking up the wickets of Aiden Markram (8), on-song Keegan Petersen (72), Marco Jansen (7) and Lungi Ngidi (3) on Day 2, to register his seventh five-wicket haul in Test cricket. He bowled 24 overs — the most by an Indian bowler — to return figures of 5/42 in the closely fought match.

Keegan Petersen showed resistance

Earlier, resuming the day on 17/1, South Africa lost Markram early. Incoming batsmen and the highest run-scorer for the home side in the ongoing Test, Petersen, then forged key partnerships with Keshav Maharaj (25), Rassie van der Dussen (21) and Temba Bavuma (28) to keep his side alive against a formidable Indian bowling line-up.

Petersen added 28 runs for the third wicket with Maharaj, 67 for the fourth with van der Dussen and 47 for the fifth with Bavuma. However, his gritty knock of 166 balls, was cut short by Bumrah in the 65th over of the match. The Western Cape-batsman had hit nine boundaries in his fine innings.

Following his dismissal, tailenders Kagiso Rabada (15) and Lungi Ngidi (3), failed to add much to the home team’s cause with Kolpak returnee Duanne Olivier remaining unbeaten on 10.
