Anil Kumble and Jim Laker, you have company! December 4, 2021 at 11:03 AM at the Wankhede stadium in Mumbai saw history being created. Ajaz Patel became the third bowler in the history of Test cricket to take all 10 wickets in an innings. When he dismissed Mohammed Siraj, Ajaz Patel took all 10 wickets in the Indian innings. He finished with figures of 47.5-12-119-10 to create history. 22 and a half years ago, Anil Kumble was the last bowler to take 10 wickets when he took 10/74 against Pakistan at the Arun Jaitley stadium in New Delhi.

This is a truly historic feat as there have been only three instances in the 144-year history of Test cricket. Jim Laker was the first individual to take all 10 wickets in an innings when he took 10/37 against Australia in Old Trafford in 1956. 43 years later, Anil Kumble took 10/74 in Delhi. Now, in the 21st century, Ajaz became the third bowler.

With all 10 wickets, Ajaz Patel, who was born in Mumbai, has achieved it in his ‘home’ turf. Ajaz was born in Jogeshwari, Mumbai and he migrated to New Zealand at a young age. He was initially not supposed to feature in New Zealand cricket’s scheme but he earned a shock call at the age of 30 for the tour to Pakistan.

With this achievement, here is the wicket dismissal of each delivery for Ajaz Patel against India.

Ajaz Patel and his list of wickets

On day 1, the wet outfield curtailed the start of the second Test. However, Ajaz Patel stole the show with some brilliant bowling as he took the top four wickets.

Wicket No.1: Shubman Gill c Ross Taylor b Ajaz Patel

Ajaz Patel bowled a tossed-up delivery just outside the off-stump. Shubman Gill pushed at the ball with hard hands. However, the delivery spun away and the edge was taken by Ross Taylor at first slip. Shubman Gill departed for 44.

Wicket No.2: Cheteshwar Pujara b Ajaz Patel

Pujara was under pressure heading into the match and it showed. Ajaz bowled a loopy delivery as Pujara danced down the track to flick it across the midwicket region. But, he missed as the ball dipped and clipped the off stump. It was a five-ball duck for Pujara.

Wicket No.3: Virat Kohli LBW Ajaz Patel

The biggest fish on day 1. It was a controversial one as well. Virat Kohli pressed forward to a delivery that spun in. It looked like the bat and pad were close to each other. The umpire gave it out and Kohli opted for the review. Replays showed that the bat was close to the pad and replays proved to be inconclusive. In the end, the third umpire stuck with the on-field decision and gave it out. Kohli was out for a four-ball duck.

Wicket No.4: Shreyas Iyer c Tom Blundell b Ajaz Patel

A typical left-arm spinner’s wicket. Ajaz used the length well and got the ball to dart in on leg stump. There was some extra bounce as Shreyas Iyer pressed forward and looked to defend. The ball took the inside edge and lobbed off the thigh pad as Tom Blundell completed a simple catch.

WICKET NO.5: Wriddhiman Saha LBW Ajaz Patel

Ajaz struck in his very first over on day 2 as he trapped Wriddhiman Saha LBW. He pushed the arm ball through and cramped Saha for room as he was going for the cut. The ball hit him low on the pads and he was given out LBW for 18.

WICKET NO.6: R Ashwin b Ajaz Patel

Ajaz was now on a hat-trick. He bowled a loopy delivery that spun away from a goodish length. Ashwin looked to defend but the ball beat his defences. It brushed the back thigh pad and hit the off stump. It was a great delivery which showed that he was in rhythm.

WICKET No.7: Mayank Agarwal c Tom Blundell b Ajaz Patel

The partnership between Mayank Agarwal and Axar Patel had helped India cross 300. Mayank reached 150 but as soon as he reached the landmark, he was undone by some great bowling. Ajaz got the delivery to angle in and then spin across sharply. Agarwal poked at it and the edge was taken by the keeper.

WICKET NO.8: Axar Patel LBW Ajaz Patel

Ajaz was now onto something very special. Axar shouldered arms to a delivery that was coming in. The umpire gave it not out but New Zealand took the review. The impact was outside off but since Axar was not playing a shot, the ball was hitting off stump. Axar fell for 52 and New Zealand sensed something great.

WICKET NO.9: Jayant Yadav c Rachin Ravindra b Ajaz Patel

It was a typical slog from the tail-ender. Jayant looked to loft a flighted delivery to long-off but he ended up miscuing it. Rachin Ravindra took the catch and Ajaz was one wicket away from history.

WICKET NO.10: Mohammed Siraj c Rachin Ravindra b Ajaz Patel

The big moment. Siraj miscued a flighted delivery and Ravindra took the catch at mid-on. Ajaz now joined Jim Laker and Anil Kumble as the other bowlers to have taken all 10 wickets in an innings. The haul of 10/119 made Ajaz Patel the bowler with the best figures in Test history for New Zealand. It was also the best for an overseas bowler in a Test in India, going past Nathan Lyon’s 8/50 in 2017. It was also the best haul against India, going past West Indies’ Jack Noreiga in 1971 when he took 9/95.
