Following their stunning victory in the first ODI, Team India will face New Zealand in the second ODI in Raipur on the 21st of January, Friday. The hosts were tested to their limits after Michael Bracewell’s spectacular effort nearly pulled off a remarkable chase for the Kiwis. After winning a last-over thriller in Hyderabad, the Men in Blue will try to wrap up the series with a win in the second ODI. Rohit Sharma, on the other hand, will be aware of the opposition after they demonstrated their credentials as the top-ranked ODI squad in the series opener. While another trophy is now within reach, India’s primary focus will be on assembling the best World Cup squad possible. In the absence of KL Rahul and Shreyas Iyer, the team management would like to see Ishan Kishan and Suryakumar Yadav spend more time in the middle. As things stand, these two appear to be the top five backups. If they do not seize their opportunity, that scenario may change by the time the World Cup arrives.

In the first ODI between the two teams, Indian opener Shubman Gill made history by being the fifth Indian player, and the youngest, to score a double century in ODIs. In the 50-over format, he also became the fastest Indian to 1000 runs. While Gill shined with the bat, Mohammed Siraj continued his dominant run with the ball, picking up his second four-for in ODIs. The Indian team is unlikely to make any changes for the second game in order to keep the winning combination. Batters rarely follow up a double-century with another big hit. Can Shubman Gill break the cycle? You wouldn’t hold that against him because his previous three scores before the double tonne were 116, 21 and 70. While India’s batting lineup appears to be quite formidable at the present, the spotlight will be on their bowlers. They let Dasun Shanaka score huge when rallying alongside the tail a few days earlier. And in Hyderabad, they were once again on top but couldn’t get that decisive wicket for a long time, putting them in the driver’s seat.

The venue:

The SVNS International Cricket Stadium, which opened in 2008, is one of India’s newest and most modern venues. The ground held its first significant game in 2010 when the Canadian national team played a one-day encounter against Chhattisgarh. The stadium made its IPL debut in 2013 when it was designated as the Delhi Daredevils’ second home site. The Daredevils won both games against PWI and Kolkata KKR here. The venue hosted eight Champions League T20 matches during the 2014 season. There were six qualifiers as well as two group-stage games held there.

The Pitch

The 22-yard strip in Raipur helps hitters because the pace of the surface here tends to slow down as the game progresses. Dew may be a factor in the second half of the game, and either captain who wins the toss may choose to bat first. The Raipur deck proved to be a decent one for batters during the Road Safety World Series T20s in September-October 2022. In all three matches, the teams batting first scored more than 170 runs.

Key players

Kuldeep Yadav, the spin wizard, has done well in the little opportunities he has had recently. He took two wickets in the previous encounter and can add to that total on Raipur’s spin-friendly surface. Ishan Kishan was dropped from the playing XI after a blistering double-century against Bangladesh in the third ODI in December 2022, with Shubman Gill taking his place. In the absence of designated keeper-batter KL Rahul, Kishan was given a well-deserved opportunity, although he batted in the middle order. He did not capitalise in the previous battle, but he has two more games to establish himself.
