India captain Rohit Sharma has tested positive for the global pandemic COVID-19 according to the result of a Rapid Antigen Test (RAT) conducted on Saturday (June 25). A BCCI release has shared that the Indian captain is currently in isolation and an RT-PCR test has been scheduled for Sunday to confirm the situation of the infection as well. A BCCI statement said: “Team India captain Mr Rohit Sharma has tested positive for COVID-19 following a Rapid Antigen Test (RAT) conducted on Saturday. He is currently in isolation at the team hotel and is under the care of the BCCI Medical Team. An RT-PCR test will be conducted on Sunday to ascertain his CT value.”

However, he is now facing a race against time in order to play in the rescheduled Test against England at Edgbaston that will start on July 1. Notably, Team India are already without their other regular opener KL Rahul, who is out of action due to a groin injury. Notably, Rohit Sharma was India’s best batsman during the four-match Tests last year before the fifth and final Test had to be rescheduled due to COVID-19 concerns in the Indian camp. He smashed 368 runs which came at an average of 52.27 including a hundred at The Oval. India lead the series 2-1 and they need to avoid defeat in the final Test so that they could clinch their first Test series in England since 2007 as well.
