A sedate start for Pakistan

England won the toss and opt to bowl first. Pakistan openers Mohammad Rizwan and Babar Azam started cautiously, adding 29 runs for the first wicket. Sam Curran drew the first blood as he castled Rizwan (15 off 14) in the 5th over. Mohammad Haris (8 off 12), struggled in the middle and eventually got dismissed by Adil Rashid.

Adil Rashid pulls the momentum towards England

While Babar Azam and Shan Masood tried to rebuild slowly through a partnership of 39 runs for the third wicket, it was Adil Rashid who once again came good for his skipper, Jos Buttler, as Rashid undone Babar Azam (32 off 28), with a sharp googly. The rescuer Iftikhar Ahmed didn’t trouble the scorers as a ripper of a delivery from Ben Stokes took his gloves on the way through to the keeper in the 13th over to reduce Pakistan to 85/4. Pakistan crawled their way to 137 runs in their 10 over.

Pakistan struck early in the Powerplay

In reply, Alex Hales was sent back early in the first over by Shaheen Shah Afridi’s brilliant inswinger. Phil Salt joined Buttler but both were dismissed in the powerplay by Rauf. England were in a spot of bother with 45-3 after 5.3 overs and the Pakistan team were charged up with the crowd going berserk.

Stokes steadied the ship and took England over the line

For England, it was Ben Stokes, once again the man of the crunch moments, who stood up and steered the ship to triumph. At one point they needed 62 runs from 62 balls and Ben Stokes and Harry Brook tinkered the scoreboard around for a while, Brooks was dismissed by Shadab. Stokes’ late flurry and Ali’s cameo towards the end took England over the line with ease.

England are the champions of the ICC T20 World Cup 2022 and it’s the second time they are getting their hands on the trophy. Sam Curran (Player of the Final) was the pick of the bowlers, with his spell reading 4-0-12-3.
