Afghanistan leg-spinner Rashid Khan is considered one of the top spinners in world cricket currently, having picked 360 wickets in the last six years. Rashid termed the dismissals of MS Dhoni, Virat Kohli and AB de Villiers as the ones he enjoyed the most, in an interaction with Cricwick. He will be seen representing Lahore Qalandars in the edition of the Pakistan Super League (PSL) set to resume soon.
“The three wickets that I enjoyed the most were of MS Dhoni, Virat Kohli, AB de Villiers. Taking wickets feels good but bowling out (hitting stumps) these three batsmen felt special,” said Rashid.
The Afghanistan leg-spinner admitted that he does not maintain tabs on the number of dismissals recorded. His sole focus is on performing well and winning matches.
“I just want to play cricket whether it’s five ten or 15 years. I don’t keep a count of wickets, I just focus on performing well for the team and win matches. What’s done in the past is gone and I focus on the present and try to help the team win.”
“I focus on smaller targets and that helps achieve bigger targets then. If I become obsessed with bigger targets such as picking 400 wickets then that could bring extra pressure on me which could impact my performance. That is why I keep things simple and focus on my job and whatever is going to happen will happen. Chris Gayle has a lot of power and he is a kind of a batsman who hits with ease. If there is not much spin on the wicket then it is very difficult to find success against him. If boundaries are like 60 65 meters, it becomes even easier for the batsmen,” he added.
Rashid believes that new variations by spinners in recent times, have played a critical role in helping them find more success.
“You have to bowl at the weak point of a batsman. If you are getting hit by targeting the weak zone of a batsman then it’s fine but if you bowl at his strong zone and get hit then that’s a problem.”
“I think variation that spinners bring into play is helping them find more success. Nowadays every spinner has so many variations they bowl leg-spin, wrong’un, slider, flipper and so batsmen get troubled because of it. Variations helped spinners feature among the top 10 bowlers. They are smart that is why they are featuring among the top,” he concluded.
