CSK vs DC: MS Dhoni's duck his first in T20s since IPL 2015

This is MS Dhoni's first duck in the IPL after 2015 and second against the Delhi-based franchise.

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) skipper MS Dhoni was dismissed for a duck in the team’s opening match of Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021 against Delhi Capitals (DC). Dhoni departed off his second delivery of the innings, following a ball by Avesh Khan which skid through in line with the stumps. The veteran attempted to throw his weight behind the pull only for the ball to crash into the stumps off an under-edge. The bails lit up in a flash, marking a duck for Dhoni in his first appearance in IPL 2021. It is further his first duck in the T20 format of the game since the 2015 edition of the IPL.

Dhoni had gone 108 consecutive innings without a duck in T20s before this dismissal, from 2015 to 2020. This was the second-longest streak, after Chris Gayle who recorded a streak of 145 innings from 2012 to 2016. Dinesh Chandimal, Shaun Marsh and JP Duminy are other notable mentions, having registered 107, 102 and 101 consecutive innings without a duck in T20s.

4th Dismissal For A Duck In IPL History

The 39-year-old has been dismissed without scoring in the IPL on four occasions so far. The first was against Rajasthan Royals (RR) in a match held in Chennai back in 2010. The second was recorded against Delhi Daredevils (DD) now known as Delhi Capitals (DC) in the same edition. The third duck was registered against Mumbai Indians (MI) in the 2015 edition, with the final one registered in the game against Delhi Capitals (DC).

Shane Watson, Dirk Nannes, Harbhajan Singh and now Avesh Khan are the four bowlers to have registered his dismissals over the years.

Dhoni’s dismissal for a duck for the fourth time in CSK colours, makes him the player with the third-highest number of ducks for the franchise. Only Subramanian Badrinath and Suresh Raina have registered more. Badrinath has recorded six ducks with Raina leading the charts for the wrong reasons at 8.

It is however interesting to note that the last time Dhoni was dismissed for a duck against a Delhi-based franchise which was back in 2010, CSK went on to win the edition.
