The Asian Games have seen India achieve a moderate level of success. Ever since they started participating in the Asian Games in 1952, they have won 139 gold, 178 silver, and 299 bronze medals. They have ranked within the top 10 of the medal tally in every edition except for the 1990 Asian Games. ESports and Breakdancing will be making their debut in the 2022 Games in China. Hangzhou and Zhejiang are the confirmed venues with five other cities.

However, apart from eSports and Breakdancing making a debut, Cricket is all set to make a comeback in the Asian Games after eight years. During the 2010 Guangzhou Asian Games, the Bangladesh cricket team won the gold medal by beating Afghanistan by five wickets. Pakistan secured the bronze while Sri Lanka finished in the fourth spot. India did not send a cricket team, while teams from Kuwait, Maldives, Nepal, Malaysia, and South Korea all participated.

Women’s cricket also participated in the tournament. Pakistan won the gold medal and Bangladesh settled for silver. Japan secured the bronze medal while China ended up fourth in the semifinal. During the 2014 Incheon Games, Sri Lanka won the gold in the men’s tournament while Pakistan once again secured the gold in women’s cricket. In both cases, Afghanistan’s men’s team has secured the silver. Bangladesh, in 2014, secured the bronze medal.

Cricket Makes Big Strides in International Events

Apart from cricket in the Asian Games, the game will make its debut in the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham in 2022. The Women’s T20 fixtures will be part of the Games for the first time in history. Cricket had made an entry in the 1998 Commonwealth Games in Kuala Lumpur. In the Olympics, Cricket was played only once. That was in the 1900 Paris Olympics. There is a possibility that the game could be included in 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.

The Asian Games will feature 40 sports with a total of 61 disciplines. This includes Olympic sports like swimming, archery, athletics, badminton, equestrian, fencing, football, hockey, judo and Kabaddi

For the first time ever, more than 300 athletes from Oceania countries have been given the chance to compete. The Oceania athletes will be allowed to compete in five sports: triathlon, athletics, wushu, roller skating, and weightlifting. India is a member of the South Asian Zone of the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA). They are one of the only seven countries that have competed in all the editions of the Asian Games.
