Big Bash League: Matthew Short 89, Peter Siddle Four Wickets help Adelaide Strikers Eliminate Hobart Hurricanes

Matthew Short smashed 89 and Peter Siddle took 4/32 as Adelaide Strikers defeated Hobart Hurricanes by 22 runs to advance to the Knockout of the Big Bash League tournament.

Matthew Short’s brilliant 89 and his stand of 145 with Alex Carey boosted Adelaide Strikers to 188/6. Peter Siddle, the captain led from the front with a brilliant haul of 4/32 as Adelaide Strikers defeated Hobart Hurricanes by 22 runs. With this result, the Adelaide Strikers have advanced to the Knockout match against Sydney Thunder. The Hobart Hurricanes’ Big Bash League campaign has ended with a loss in the Eliminator contest.

Adelaide Strikers chose to bat at the Melbourne Cricket Ground and immediately, they put Hobart Hurricanes under pressure. Alex Carey was in fine form, hammering three boundaries in one over bowled by Thomas Rogers. Matthew Short, on the other hand, took his time and he got a life when Rogers dropped a catch off Scott Boland.

Short hit a six off Riley Meredith and he piled on the agony for Hobart Hurricanes when Boland fluffed a half-chance off Meredith. Carey notched up his fifty and Short followed suit with a six off Meredith. Short hit another six and raced into the 70s with a six and four off Wil Parker. Boland broke the 145-run stand by dismissing Carey. Short blasted two sixes off Parker but he fell for a glorious 89.

Hobart Hurricanes fought back in grand style, with Meredith taking two wickets in the 18th over. Adelaide Strikers scored just 39 runs in the last five overs as they ended on 188/6.

Having done brilliantly with the bat, Short dismantled Hobart Hurricanes with the ball. He struck a major blow by removing Ben McDermott for 6. Caleb Jewell showed his intent with two boundaries but Peter Siddle struck a major blow by removing Matthew Wade cheaply.

D’Arcy Short got going with a six while Jewell looked in good touch with a couple of boundaries off Matthew Short. But, Hobart Hurricanes continued to lose wickets. Harry Conway sent back Jewell. With the asking rate mounting, D’Arcy Short decided to open up with Peter Handscomb. D’Arcy Short smashed two boundaries off Siddle. D’Arcy Short notched up his fifty with a six and four off Conway.

But, Henry Thornton broke the stand and ensured there was no way out for Hobart Hurricanes as he sent back both D’Arcy Short and Handscomb in quick succession. Tim David kept the fight going with two sixes off Ahmed but Siddle ran through the lower order. His four wickets gave Adelaide Strikers the win. They will now challenge the Sydney Thunder in the Eliminator. Sydney Sixers, on the other hand, will take on Perth Scorchers. The winner will go directly into the final.
