Michael Slater slams Australian PM over ban on citizens returning from IPL

The former Australian cricketer recently lashed out at the Australian government on Twitter after Cricket Australia’s (CA) Chief Nick Hockley said that there have been no suggestions for bringing back Australians involved in the 2021 edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) back home. Hockley’s comments came amidst a deadly second wave of the coronavirus in India, which resulted in the Australian government’s decision to ban all flights from India until May 15, 2021. Slater said that the Australian Prime Minister had blood on his hands, and slammed him for not allowing his countryman to return from India.

“If our Government cared for the safety of Aussies they would allow us to get home. It’s a disgrace!! Blood on your hands PM. How dare you treat us like this. How about you sort out quarantine system. I had government permission to work on the IPL but I now have government neglect,” Slater tweeted.

‘Stop the abuse’

He also went on to urge his PM to “stop the abuse” and show some empathy to his fellow countrymen.

“And for those who think this is a money exercise. Well forget it. This is what I do for a living and I have not made a penny having left early. So please stop the abuse and think of the thousands dying in India each day. It’s called empathy. If only our government had some!” Slater said in a separate tweet.

The organizers were forced to reschedule a fixture between the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) and Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) after KKR’s Sandeep Warrier and Varun Chakravarthy tested positive for the virus ahead of the game. There was also a lot of debate, mostly amongst fans, about whether hosting the tournament was the right thing to do.
