Following the untimely death of Australia cricket legend Andrew Symonds, his close friends and fans from across the world, have shared their fondest memories of him and paid homage in the process. Symonds passed away following a car crash in the early hours of Sunday. He is survived by wife Laura and young children Chloe and Billy. The initial investigation and reports have suggested that the Australia legend died in a single-car crash at Hervey Range outside of Townsville after his car rolled off the road.

Andrew Symonds: Steve Crawley reveals the last message

Symonds was an enigma on the field. He wore his heart on his sleeve and was not afraid to give it back to his opponents when he took on the field. It was a matter of pride for him. But away from the field, in the dressing rooms, and with his friends and work colleagues away from the 24 yards, he was a humorous character. A testament to his prolonged humorous side is reflected on his last text message which he sent to Fox Sports Executive Director Steve Crawley, a couple of hours before the tragic accident.

Andrew Symonds was off the contract with Fox Cricket

Symonds was off the contract with Fox Cricket after spending four years with the network as a commentator and pundit. He had sent Crawley a screenshot of a news story about NFL star Tom Brady’s staggering AU$540 million broadcasting deal with Fox Sports in the United States. “Crawls, we need to talk. Roy,” Symonds texted alongside the screenshot, according to The Daily Telegraph. Crawley had responded with a laughing emoji.

‘Andrew Symonds was a nice guy’

Crawley, further said in the interview, that he would like to remember Symonds as a nice guy and a great Australian character. “I’d like to remember him as a nice guy, because that’s what he was,” Crawley said. “He was a great Australian character, sort of like an outback hero like the Crocodile Hunter, but real.” In a statement from Fox Sports, Crawley added: “Andrew Symonds was one of a kind. “We awake to this shocking news and our deepest sympathies are with his wife Laura, two children and all of his work mates and dear friends throughout Fox Sports and the Cricket fraternity.”
