Bayern Munich talisman Robert Lewandowski has played a pivotal role in the club’s success across competitions in the last few seasons. The Polish striker is leading the race for the Torjagerkanone in the 2021-22 season of Bundesliga with 28 goals under his best from 24 matches. It has helped the German record champions maintain their top spot in the league and inch closer to their milestone 10 titles in as many years after their 1-0 win over Eintracht Frankfurt and Borussia Dortmund’s 1-1 draw with FC Augsburg over the weekend.

Bayern Munich have secured an eight points cushion over their traditional rivals after matchday 24. Lewandowski believes it will be a historic achievement for the club which would be looked up to in the future for generations to come.

“Winning a tenth league title in 10 years is something historic. In the future, people will say, ‘Wow. Who was that group? Who was in it?’ We have a chance to be the first team to do this in the Bundesliga,” Lewandowski was quoted as saying by bavarianfootballworks.com.

Robert Lewandowski on his second-place finish in Ballon d’Or

The Poland and Bayern Munich talisman pipped the liked of seven times Ballon d’Or holder Lionel Messi and Liverpool ace Mohamed Salah to be named the FIFA Best Men’s player 2021. It was, in fact, his second straight award to etch his name in history books as one of the greatest centre-forwards of all-time.

The Polish player went on to score 43 goals across competitions in 2021 which also helped him secure a second-place finish in the Ballon d’Or behind Argentine great Lionel Messi.

“The fact that I was put together with Lionel Messi shows how good the season was. When you finish second behind Messi, you can call yourself a winner,” he explained.

However, after a brilliant performance in the group stage of the Champions League, Bayern Munich struggled to salvage a 1-1 draw with RB Salzburg in the first leg of the round of 16 in the Champions League.

The German giants were devoid of the services from Manuel Neuer and Leon Goretzka in the first leg but Lewandowski is optimistic about their chances of lifting a seventh Champions League title.

“We are the favorites to win the LM (Champions League). If we maintain our form, we have a good chance for success,” Lewandowski said.

Their second leg of Round of 16 fixture is slated to be played on March 9.
