Bayern Munich defeated Borussia Dortmund 3-1 on Saturday to clinch their 10th successive Bundesliga title. The result helped the Bavarians to move 12 points clear at the summit with only three matchday’s remaining. At the Allianz Arena, first-half goals from Serge Gnabry and Robert Lewandowski gave a 2-0 lead to Julian Nagelsmann’s side. Although Dortmund pulled one back through Emre Can early in the second half, Jamal Musiala’s late strike sealed Bayern victory.

The result has helped Bayern to secure their 31st Bundesliga title since the introduction of the top division in 1963, and 32 German league crowns in total. Meanwhile Thomas Muller became the first player to win 11 league titles.

In front of a 75,000 strong home crowd, Bayern were desperate to secure the title after a surprise Champions League exit in the quarter-final stage against Villarreal last week. The hosts took their first chance and put their nose ahead through Gnabry inside the opening 15 minutes. The German forward controlled the ball on the edge of the box with one touch and unleashed a fierce volley past the visiting goalkeeper Marwin Hitz and into the back of the net.

Gnabry put the ball inside the net once again on the half-hour mark but was ruled offside. But Lewandowski doubled the lead on 34 minutes. The Polish legend received the pass from Muller and slotted in through the legs of Hitz for his 33rd league goal of the season. The 34-year-old is comfortably sitting at the summit of the top scorers list, having scored 12 goals more than his nearest challenger Schik of Bayern Leverkusen.

Seven minutes after the break, Dortmund pulled one back when Marco Reus was fouled inside the box and the referee pointed to the spot. Can stepped up and converted the spot kick. The visitors upped their intensity but failed to score again despite efforts from Reus and Erling Haaland.

Meanwhile substitute Musiala sealed the three points for the hosts in the 82nd minute when he slotted home seconds after his initial effort was saved by Dortmund keeper Hitz. It was Bayern’s 24th victory in 31 league games so far in the 2021-22 season, and will pass their tally of 78 points from last season if they pick up four points from their remaining three games.

Nagelsmann has now won two trophies in his first season in charge of Bayern, having kicked off the season with a 3-1 win over Dortmund in the DFL-Supercup final. Despite securing the Bundesliga title, with three games remaining, Bayern’s season won’t be considered a success by many football pundits and fans, because of their failure at the continental stage.

However, since it was Nagelsmann’s first year at the club, he could be given an excuse and the platform is set for them to go on to achieve greater things in 2022-23. The game against Villarreal proved Bayern still has a number of issues to be resolved in order to triumph at the European stage. Therefore the club management’s focus will be on the summer transfer market.
