Two-time youth champion Nitu Ghanghas got the better of Northern Ireland’s Nicole Clyde and ensured the first boxing medal for India. It was a one-sided affair as the opposition boxer retired after the second round. Nitu became the winner on the basis of ABD (abandon). The Indian will face Canada’s Priyanka Dhillon in the semi-finals of the Women’s minimum weight category. Nitu’s performance in the previous encounter has made her one of the favorites to clinch gold in her category.

The 21-year pugilist hails from the Dhanana village of Bhiwani District, Haryana. Nitu’s father had a major role in her taking up boxing professionally. She, alongside her father, traveled 70 km to practice at the Bhiwani Boxing club. Her father Jai Bhagwan took a three-year leave from work to devote his time towards Nitu’s career. Her father’s devotion paid off as she is now one of the most promising boxers in India.
