The USA will play Serbia in the 2022 FIBA Women’s World Cup quarterfinals on Thursday at noon Sydney time/Wednesday at 10 p.m. ET live on ESPNU and ESPN+ after finishing the preliminary round in first place in Group A (5-0). Three-time defending World Cup winners, the United States, advanced to the quarterfinals with victories against Korea (145-65), China (77-63), and Bosnia and Herzegovina (121-59).
With 145 points against Korea on Monday, the USA broke the previous scoring mark for the FIBA Women’s World Cup. The USA averaged 107.2 points per game in its first five games. With 27 straight victories in the World Cup, the United States is vying for its fourth straight and 11th overall victory. The United States leads the World Cup match versus Serbia 1-0 after taking the 2014 group stage match in Istanbul 94-74.
With a perfect 5-0 record in Group A, the defending champion the United States, captained by A’ja Wilson, earned their place in the last eight. They also broke the records for most points scored in a World Cup game and most straight victories at a World Cup. Serbia and France both advanced, finishing third and fourth, with three victories and two defeats, respectively. Everything is on the line when the knockout rounds get underway since the victor of this year’s competition will not only secure the World Cup but also a qualification berth for Paris 2024.
