Taranaki Mountainairs vs Auckland Huskies NBL New Zealand Playoffs match will be held on August 11. Sal’s NBL has provided fascinating matches and highlight reel fodder each week with just three rounds remaining, but winning the championship would undoubtedly be the biggest highlight for any club. It’s exciting to see that there are still eight teams competing for the top six slots and the opportunity to reserve a table at the big dance and take home the trophy. The Manawatu Jets put up a fight, but the Nelson Giants held them off with goals from Trey Mourning and Samuel Thompson to escape Palmerston North with a victory and some breathing room in the tightest game of the week. The Nelson Giants are the only club guaranteed a spot in the semifinals.
The only club left in the running for the top seed (and the preferable rest and matches that go along with it) is the Taranaki Airs, who demonstrated in a win against the Canterbury Rams that they can grind out victories with grit and defense if the offense doesn’t perform to its potential. The Rams are now outsiders after their defeat. The Jets and Southland Sharks are seated at a table for three and are expecting one more RSVP to the dinner party at table 8 while the top of the table only has space for two teams.

Table 8 is so named because any team with 8 victories or fewer will probably not be invited past the postseason’s velvet rope. Despite flawless performances from the Dontae Russo-Nance/Siler Schneider backcourt, the Sharks stunned the league by defeating the Auckland Tuatara and finally appearing like the squad they aspired to be this season. In contrast to the Sharks, a lethal import trio that shot 50% from beyond the arc during the game prevented the Jets from pulling off an upset. However, similar to Southland, the Jets will still be able to significantly influence the remaining playoff contenders with a few upsets down the line, and both teams will need to relish playing spoiler with the championship game out of reach.
